Supp Your Way to Success: Magic of the Multivitamin

Benefits of the Multivitamin and Quality

Multivitamins are the probably the most heavily marketed supplement brand out there. From pharmacies to vitamin brands, every company has "the best" multivitamin for you.

Let's break down how a multivitamin benefits you and what to look for when choosing a brand.

BENEFITS

On average, a person should have 5-12 cups a day of fruit, vegetables and legumes in order to obtain an adequate amount of micronutrients. This task is difficult, as most people do not have time to sit down and consume 5-12 cups of greens and fruits per day, and most neither have the appetite for it.

This is where multivitamins can make up the deficit. Fruits and vegetables are critical for obtaining micronutrients, which are fundamental in both metabolic function and overall well-being. While multivitamins themselves should never be a replacement for a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables, they are an excellent supplement and will aid in your overall bodily functions.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

There are hundreds of different brands and types of multivitamins on the market, advertised constantly. This makes it difficult to determine what is actually beneficial and what is a waste of money.

The first quality to look for is type of multivitamin itself. Gummies are ineffective and are mainly marketed to those who do not even want to bother with supplementing a deficient diet in the first place. Tablets are more effective than gummies but tend to be poor quality and do not absorb well into the bloodstream, as they are broken down in the stomach versus the small intestine. Tablets are also hard on the stomach.

The ideal multivitamin is in a capsule, which will prevent it from being broken down by the stomach, thereby allowing it to be absorbed into the bloodstream as it makes its way through the small intestine.

The next important quality to look for is that of which the vitamin itself consists. Efficacious dosing is critical for a good supplement, and many multivitamins tend to be underdosed and sold for cheap. Better-quality vitamin brands tend to be pricier, but at times, the quality is truly worth the price.

An effective multivitamin will be comprised of vitamins such as, A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, K, copper, manganese and others. Men and women also have different dietary and supplementation needs, so a man's multivitamin will differ from a woman's.

For example, male multivitamins will be more focused on stimulating muscle-protein synthesis and help protect the prostate, whereas their female counterpart will be more focused on premature aging and hormone function.

All in all, multivitamins should be an integral component of anyone's diet and ideally taken in the morning, about 15-20 minutes prior to eating. Your body will thank you for it!
